Nine rowers rescued in choppy waters off Piermont
Nine members of the Piermont Rowing Association were rescued from the Hudson River Saturday after their scull boat suddenly starting taking on water.
The rowers say the waters were calm when they set out off the Piermont Pier. Sudden winds from the northeast caused whitecaps and the boat began to take on water, leaving the crew stranded against some rocks on the north side of the pier. They called 911 and waited patiently until rescue units responded and brought them aboard.
The Piermont fire chief said conditions were not optimal for taking a scull out on the Hudson. Members of the rowing association say scull boats are designed not to sink and rowers should never abandon their boat.
All nine members of the rowing club were checked out by EMS crews on the scene and no injuries were reported.
