A Newburgh man is dead after being hit by a car in the town of Lloyd. 

State police say Leon Ponder was walking on State Route 9W over the weekend when he was fatally struck.

Officers say the driver told them that Ponder was walking in the middle of the lane. He says he tried to avoid hitting him, but struck him with the passenger side of the car.

Police say the driver was not impaired or on a cellphone.
