New Zika virus case confirmed in Putnam County
A confirmed case of the Zika virus in Putnam County has brought the total number of cases in the Hudson Valley to three.
This comes after a woman was diagnosed with Zika in Rockland last week, along with another case discovered in Orange County.
The current case count in New York in now at 16, while it has reached 80 people nationwide. The bulk of the cases worldwide have been in Latin America.
Health officials don't expect widespread transmission of the mosquito-borne virus here in the U.S., but pregnant women are the most at risk, with Zika suspected to cause severe birth defects in newborns.
Health officials say the newly diagnosed Rockland resident recently traveled out of the country.
Tests are also underway on another Putnam resident who may also have Zika.
