An Orange County woman is facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly starving her dog to death.
Police say Janice Evering, of New Windsor, left her 6-year-old Rottweiler home alone without food or water for three months while she was on vacation.
The SPCA's chief law enforcement officer said a dog that age should weigh about 90 pounds. Her dog was just 35 pounds.
"It was totally emaciated," said Gene Hecht, of the Hudson Valley SPCA. "It was all skin and bones. That's all it was. We couldn't find any meat on the dog whatsoever. Its hips ... everything was just caved in."
The SPCA began investigating after Evering called the Humane Society complaining about the dog. When officials arrived, they say the pet was so sick that it couldn't even raise its head.
The dog was euthanized and Evering was arrested for allegedly abandoning the dog.
Evering is facing several misdemeanor charges and was due in court last week, but she did not show up. She has another court date set for next month.
Law enforcement officials believe she has left the state.
