In an effort to expand testing to minority communities, New York has created 24 temporary coronavirus testing sites, including one at Westchester County's largest church.
Early diagnostic and antibody tests show the coronavirus has impacted communities of color the most, and at a level disproportionate to other racial and ethnic groups.
Mount Vernon's Grace Baptist Church is the newest site setup for testing. This week, Northwell Health is offering both virus and antibody testing.
Nurses expect to perform more than 1,000 virus tests by the end of the week. Leading the way is Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, the church's senior pastor -- he's getting his antibody test and encouraging others to do the same.
"The underlying factors are abundant in African American communities," says Richardson. "So, therefore, we have to respond, if in fact, we are more impacted that means we accelerate our response. Making testing available in our community helps us to get out in front of the situation."
Tests are free, but an appointment is necessary. To schedule one, call 833-422-7369.
