New Rochelle High School students are slamming their English department for taking out a racy section from a book used for senior film class discussion.
Students reading Susanna Kaysen's memoir ?Girl, Interrupted? noticed a big gap when they got to page 62. The book continued at page 71.
According to a statement by school Superintendent Richard Organisciak, the section in question was removed by faculty members who deemed it to be too provocative for students.
In 2001, when the book was purchased to address and discuss mental health in a 10th grade class, questions were raised by teachers about its appropriateness. After being shelved for years, the memoir was introduced into the curriculum for a senior film class, but with the controversial section still missing.
The Board of Education released a statement about the allegations of literature censorship, saying that it ?does not specifically endorse any of the author's language or content, but the Board respects the integrity of the complete work."
The Board of Education is planning to replace all 50 censored books with the complete version of the memoir.
