New Rochelle is going green, one light at a time.
Nearly 7,000 street lights are being changed to energy-efficient LEDs.
The first LED was installed Monday outside of City Hall
The green initiative will also help save taxpayers some money. The city will reportedly save almost $640,000 per year after the first seven years.
The mayor says taxpayers won't see a decrease in their taxes, but the money saved could go toward other things like city parks.
For those thinking of switching to LEDs, Value Drugs in Eastchester carries the bulbs for $7.99. Regular bulbs cost $3.99
However, based on average energy prices in Westchester, consumers will spend about 59 cents per month on regular bulbs, versus 9 cents on LEDs.
