A priest from New Rochelle who was in Athens, Greece, during the wildfires described for News 12 the destruction that has been left behind.
Father Nicholas Anctil, who heads Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in New Rochelle, has been in Athens watching as cars and homes were taken out by the fires.
"We could smell the smoke even from that far away," says Father Anctil. "The entire country is almost in mourning over it because it affected so many people."
News 12 has been told that there are still fires burning in some places in Athens. So far, 79 people are believed to be dead.
Father Anctil says he plans to discuss ways to help the people from his native land with his congregation when he returns from Athens next week.
