New Rochelle named 1 of 5 safest cities in U.S.
For the seventh year in a row, New Rochelle remains one of the five safest cities in the nation, according to the FBI.
Despite some high profile incidents, new numbers show the city on the Sound is the safest it's been in years. In a report released by the New Rochelle Police Department, crime is at a 40-year low. In 2007, major crimes such as assault, burglary, robbery, murder and rape decreased by 11 percent.
New Rochelle Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll credits the low crime to proactive policing by his officers.
"We put our resources where the action is and we drive those numbers down when they start up," says Carroll.
Others give credit to the recent development boom.
Ironically last year, the newly developed New Roc City was the epicenter of the biggest public disturbance in the city?s history. An Easter night riot erupted in the streets outside of the entertainment complex bringing armed policeman from around the county to the scene.
However, Mayor Noam Branson calls the New Roc City riot an isolated incident and says the crime statistics tell the true story of the city.
