New Rochelle melee sparks new security measures
The New Rochelle hot spot at the center of an Easter Sunday riot between police and hundreds of teens said it plans to install ?comprehensive? security measures by the weekend to prevent trouble in the future.
Police armed in riot gear faced off against the teens, some affiliated with street gangs, at the New Roc City entertainment complex on Sunday. Police say shots were fired during the melee, missing the crowd.
The fracas, which police say was the result of severe overcrowding, left three people injured.
New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bransom admits there are gangs in Westchester, but said there is ?no reason to believe there's a particular concentration of gang activity at New Roc or anywhere else in New Rochelle.?
A spokesman for New Roc City says a comprehensive safety package to enhance security at the club should be implemented by the weekend. The new measures will take into account ways to deal with crowding conditions. The spokesman said there are currently 200 closed-circuit security cameras focused on the club.To view the New Rochelle mayor?s comments on the riot, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and click on iO Extra.
