Neighbors who live near the Mario Cuomo Bridge are thankful for the peace and quiet now that construction on the span is complete.
Mia Derosa says she loves the view of the bridge at night when it's all lit up, but adds that she won't miss the noise she woke up to during the five years of construction.
Derosa says she did have concerns at the beginning of the project about noise and disruption. She says it ended up not being that bad.
Homeowners like Derosa received new windows and doors free of charge from the state to help reduce the sound pollution.
While some people are happy with the new bridge, some say the project was too costly, took way too long and has too many regulations. Some residents are just not happy with the name change.
"This guy names a bridge after his father," says Gene Weinberg of Salisbury Point. "Everyone loves their dad. His father was from Queens. Go find a street where he lived and call it Mario Cuomo Way."
The second span of the $4 billion project was slated to open to traffic overnight Friday into Saturday. Officials said the right lane would be the first to open as crews work throughout the night to open all four lanes.
