More than a century ago, a man routinely walked through Westchester and made a tremendous impact on the county.

The intrigue of the mysterious stranger known as the Leatherman is still very much alive in Westchester. In the 1800s, the Leatherman would journey by foot from Connecticut through various communities in the county, making a 365-mile loop every 34 days.

The timing of the Leatherman's visits were so dependable it's said people could set their clocks by him each month. Historians say he was always recognizable by his leather suit, for which he was named.

The Leatherman's body was found in one of the caves he frequented in Mount Pleasant. He was buried in a nearby graveyard in 1889. He left such an impression, his obituary was published in the New York Times.The Leatherman?s real identity has never been determined, despite ongoing efforts by many to uncover the mystery.
