Mudslide victims hope to return home
More than 100 people, forced from their homes by a massive mudslide, are hoping to return to their Yonkers apartments this week.
It's been a long three weeks for the people living in the apartment building at 95-97 Walsh Road. On March 11, a retaining wall collapsed causing a massive mudslide that slammed several tons of stone and debris into the back of the building.
As a result, the more than 100 people living there had to be evacuated. Sixty-five of those people have been staying at the Ramada Inn on Tuckahoe Road with the city's Municipal Housing Authority footing the bill.
The tenants were supposed to be back home last week but that had to be pushed back as engineers wait for the results of soil testing to determine the safety of the ground. Those results will also help them figure out how to repair all the damage.
Today Mayor Mike Spano, along with Housing authority officials, came by the hotel to give an update. Spano says the city is doing everything it can to figure out how to make a temporary fix so the people can go home. "It's a holiday season, and people want to be in their homes and I get it and that's why we're pushing very, very hard with the state to make sure they move quickly," says Spano.
