A mudslide in Yonkers prompted the evacuation of over 100 people from an apartment building Wednesday.

Firefighters and emergency workers were on the scene of nine-story apartment building that houses mostly seniors on 95-97 Walsh Road.

Residents said they heard a boom that felt like an earthquake. They also told News 12 that melting snow had been compromising a wall behind the building for days.

Officials said that a stone retaining wall collapsed, sending 8 feet of mud and stone crashing into the building. Investigators believe the cause was a pipe that belonged to another building from the street above that wall.

"It looks like there had been an ongoing water leak in the rear of the building for who knows how long and that compromised the wall, leading to its collapse," said Yonkers Fire Department Commissioner John Darcy.

No injuries have been reported. The building was cleared as a precaution, and it is not known when residents will be allowed to return. Though the building that was evacuated is stable, the entry way and emergency exits are still blocked.

The city reserved 80 hotel rooms for displaced residents.
