For the second time in two months, Mount Vernon police raided a major marijuana greenhouse and arrested the alleged grower Thursday.
Authorities seized 100 marijuana plants weighing 100 pounds from the basement of 529 South 11th Ave. The street value of the marijuana is said to be around $300,000.
According to police, the man who operated the pot nursery is 21-year-old Luis Diaz, from the Dominican Republic, who lived at the residence with his girlfriend.
In the course of the bust, a task force composed of Mount Vernon detectives, state police and members of the Westchester County District Attorney's Office confiscated the marijuana, as well as several generators and lamps.
Police say if there had been a fire in the house, other homes could have gone up in flames because of the flammable marijuana-growing paraphernalia.
?This is was a very, very dangerous situation with the chemicals they use,? says Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong.
Diaz was the only one arrested during Thursday?s raid, but police say the investigation is ongoing.
