Mt. Vernon police probe suspicious item
Police cordoned off the area around Prospect Avenue in Mount Vernon Thursday while they investigated a suspicious item left at a bus stop.
Police called in a bomb-sniffing dog to investigate the briefcase that was spotted by a passerby outside 65 East Prospect Ave.
An officer later opened the briefcase and thoroughly examined it, failing to find explosives or hazardous materials. Police say the bag contained personal items, but no identification.
During the investigation, police evacuated three stores located on the block where the briefcase was found and re-routed buses.
