Mt. Vernon mayoral candidates square off in TV debate
The gloves came off Tuesday night as the candidates for Mount Vernon mayor squared off in their first televised debate.
This was the first time incumbent Mayor Ernie Davis, County Legislator Clinton Young and Republican Janet Synder were together in the same room since they announced their candidacies.
Young won the Democratic primary in September and during the debate, Young asked the party faithful to make history repeat itself in November. Davis, now running on two minor party lines made it clear during the debate that he?s not going down without a fight.
Topics the three candidates debated ranged from affordable house, crime, education and a federal corruption probe. Davis was put on the defensive several times when the topic of the ongoing investigation came up. Throughout the debate, Synder indirectly referenced the probe. The investigation partly involves the city?s Urban Renewal Agency and Davis? leadership.
The candidates ended the night pleading with their supporters to head out on Election Day and vote.To view the entire debate, go to channel 612 on your iO digitial cable box and click on iO Extra.
