Mt. Vernon mayor to probe convicted official
Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young has launched an internal investigation of former Planning Commissioner Constance "Gerrie" Post, who was convicted on federal fraud and conspiracy charges earlier in the week.
Young says the goal of the probe is to find out why no one in City Hall discovered that Post had been funneling money to her boyfriend, Wayne Charles, in the course of seven years.
"Corruption of any kind within the city of Mount Vernon is not and will not be tolerated," he says.
On Tuesday, Post and Charles were found guilty of stealing $2.3 million in federal funds through fake service contracts and loans.
The internal investigation has been handed over to the city's Inspector General Harry Stokes. At a news conference in City Hall Friday, Stokes said no one person will be the target of the probe.
Young contends that Post's behavior should have raised red flags among her colleagues during the administration of his predecessor, Ernie Davis. Davis, however, insists that the investigation is a waste of the city's resources.
"To take up the taxpayers' money on trying to investigate something that's already been investigated," he says. "One who has a reasonable amount of intelligence would have to wonder why."
