A bomb threat evacuated students, teachers and administrators from Mt. Vernon High School Monday afternoon.

An hour later, everyone was allowed to return to the school building after the police and fire departments determined the threat was false.

Students had just finished attending an assembly that addressed the recent violence in the community. Last week, two young men were fatally shot and one wounded on the streets of Mt. Vernon. On Friday, a female police officer was assaulted on school grounds.

Mt. Vernon High School principal Stephen Jackson says violence from the streets often spills over into the schools, but that the school was a safe haven.

Mayor Ernie Davis will hold an anti-violence summit Tuesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church.
