An audit conducted by the Mount Vernon comptroller's office has found more than $10,000 of the estimated $22,000 collected by the city's Youth Bureau is gone.
This past summer, many Mount Vernon parents enrolled their children in the Safe Haven Day Camp run out the Longfellow Middle School.
Many of those parents paid cash for the fee, but now much of that money is missing, according to the audit.
City officials think the problem stems from some employees not following safeguards for the lockbox where the money was kept.
Once it was discovered the money was missing, the police and the district attorney were contacted. After further investigation, a clerk was fired and another employee was suspended.
Officials also say new safeguards are being put in place to prevent such theft in the future.
