Mount Vernon school told it's not making the grade
A Mount Vernon school is now being looked at by the state's Department of Education.The Nelson Mandela Community High School is one of 15 schools in New York that has been added to the department's watch list.The list is designed to make sure English and math scores remain at a certain level, which the school did not meet. The high school was also cited for poor attendance. The school will now have to make improvements or risk being shut down.School officials say part of the problem is that they are an alternative school, but are still being held to the same standards as regular schools.State education officials say they will work with the school to try to make improvements.Related information: New York State Education Department
