Mount Vernon police say they have made an arrest in connection to a deadly shooting that happened Monday.

The arrest is linked to the shooting death of Trevon Boswell on Washington Street. The 24-year-old was shot and killed in the hallway of the building, just feet from his second-floor apartment.

Remaining tight-lipped, police say a suspect was apprehended Monday night within the city and is a resident of Mount Vernon. Authorities also recovered a handgun but would not disclose any charges the suspect is facing.

As the city investigates its first homicide of the year, Mayor Richard Thomas announced a new initiative: Project Bright Knight. The initiative is a $700,000 investment in new technology to aid the police department to fight crime.

Components to the project include smartphones and license plate readers, as well as the establishment of a conflict resolution center. Thomas also announced the department's use of drones, which he said would help them identify "where people run in the middle of the night."

Thomas says the new technology won't cost taxpayers a dime. He hopes to implement it by the summer.
