People in Mount Vernon have another way to cool off this summer.
Starting today, Mount Vernon officials are inviting residents to dive into the pool at the Mount Vernon High School.
The pool, which has been closed for over a decade, is available to residents of all ages who want to swim laps or just swim around and have a lot of fun. They also plan to add fitness programs and, most importantly, swimming in the coming weeks.
Renovations on the pool began in 2014 and were completed last December. “This is a huge, huge step for Mount Vernon because if you wanted swim lessons you had to go outside the area for them,” says swim assistant Alfredo Riullano.
Officials say all you have to do to swim is show proof that you live in the school district and pay a $5 fee. Open swim hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. “I think it's a great way for the community to come together to build families,” says Deputy Superintendent of Mount Vernon Schools Jeff Gorman.
