Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard says there was a potential abuse of power by the Mount Vernon police.
"This morning, I was able to have a deeper conversation with the family for which I can say I am quite concerned," she said.
Mayor Patterson-Howard did not give specific details about the report, but says Internal Affairs is now investigating.
The mayor told residents she's serious about police reform and will not accept abuse of power or improper use of force.
"We are living in a time right now where there's so much heightened anxiety around police community relationships and police misconduct, and so we felt the need to address it," she said.
The mayor says swift action will be taken if it's found that anything was done inappropriately.
As News 12 has reported, Mount Vernon Police Officer Ryan Hughes is suspended without pay and charged with reckless endangerment for allegedly using excessive force with a woman under arrest.
He surrendered to the District Attorney's Office last week.
