Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard made history Monday by appointing Deborah Norman as the first female fire commissioner in the city.
Norman, a former Army police officer, has worked in several administrations in various capacities for 17 years.
She insists the appointment as the city's top firefighter is something she never imagined for herself.
Norman says her top priorities are advocating for the resources her firefighters need.
There are no current female firefighters in Mount Vernon.
Commissioner Norman and Mayor Patterson-Howard say that's something they are hoping to change.
