A Mount Vernon man was arraigned Tuesday on a number of charges after police say he stole a fire truck that was responding to a fire at his own home.
Police say 32-year-old Fletcher Quiller escaped last week?s fire at a South Third Avenue apartment building and proceeded to steal a ladder truck. When police caught up with Quiller down the block they found marijuana in his pocket. Quiller?s mother says her son was trying to save people from the fire and help set up the truck.
The fire commissioner says Quiller?s actions actually slowed down the firefighters? efforts. The building is now boarded up and may have to be demolished. Quiller is charged with larceny, obstruction of governmental administration and drug possession.
