Mount Vernon just got a major boost in funding as the city works toward a complete overhaul of its wastewater system.
On Friday, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Jamaal Bowman announced $3 million in funding they secured to address Mount Vernon's sewage crisis.
As News 12 has reported, raw sewage continues to leak from the system into rivers and waste overflows in many homes throughout the city.
The funding will go toward hiring engineers to create a comprehensive plan to replace the aging sewer infrastructure.
It will take an estimated $200 million to replace the entire sewer system.
