Mount Vernon police are working overtime to solve the city's second 2007 homicide, which started as a car wreck call.
Authorities say they don't believe Saturday's shooting is gang related, but they suspect drugs may be to blame. Records show the victim, 37-year-old Garfield Payne, of Virginia, had a long rap sheet of drug possession charges. Police say they found Payne shot at W. Seventh Street and S. Sixth Avenue and his car smashed into a utility pole. While he was conscious, police say the victim told them he was hanging out at a nearby Laundromat. Detectives are unsure whether Payne was shot at the Laundromat or on the street. He later died at the hospital.
As the investigation intensifies, the city's other murder case remains open. Dwayne Foster was shot to death January 5 at a deli. Anyone with information on either case is urged to call police at 914-665-2588.
