The municipal animal shelter in Mount Vernon will soon be closing its doors.
City officials confirmed to News 12 that the shelter will be closing at the end of next month. For now, the shelter will remain open as staff attempts to adopt out animals.
News 12 is told the decision has been made to contract the city's animal shelter services with the Humane Society of Westchester, something 19 other municipalities in the county already do.
The news of the closure was first posted on Instagram Thursday by the Friends of the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter and the shelter's page itself.
The post says the main priority right now is finding homes for animals in the care of the shelter. But the post also raised some alarm in the community, with some residents commenting saying they are unhappy with the decision and questioning why the city won't keep the shelter, which is more conveniently located for Mount Vernon residents.
More information about the decision is expected from city officials Monday.
