Mount Pleasant residents report unusually high water bills after new meters
Some Mount Pleasant residents say that their water bills are unusually high after new meters were installed.
Jane Santo lives in the affluent Old Farm Water District in Mount Pleasant, a town that just installed brand-new water meters.
Santo says her last bill was triple the amount of her previous bills from the past year.
"I want them to tell me how I could have possibly used 135,000 gallons of water since July. How? It's not possible,” she says.
Santo’s daughter, who lives down the street, also says her water bill has tripled.
When Santo called a phone number for help, she says she was told she may have a leak, that the bill was dated wrong or there was something wrong with the water meter. She says she was never told someone was going to come to her house and check the meter.
News 12 took all of Santo’s water bills, including the one in which she claims she was overcharged, to the Mount Pleasant Water Department. They told News 12 that they would have to speak to the water superintendent, who wasn't in. They then pointed News 12 to the Mount Pleasant town supervisor. He was called, but he hasn’t called back.
Santo says she wants an answer not just for herself, but also for her neighbors who she claims are dealing with the same problem.
