Mount Kisco police tried to bridge their gap with the Hispanic community at a fair after a cop was indicted in an immigrant's death.
Police officers attended an annual Latino fair Sunday, organized by the Popul Vuhl organization. Mayor Michael Cindrich urged revelers to take a minute to speak to cops at the event.The relationship has been strained since a homeless Guatemalan man, Rene Perez, was found beaten on a Bedford road April 28. In September, Officer George Bubaris was charged with manslaughter in the case and suspended without pay.
Chief Steve Anderson, who also attended the fair, took over the department after the incident. "We're here to serve everybody fairly and equally and treat everyone respectfully," Anderson said.
A Popul Vuhl member said he appreciated the gesture the department made to mend the fence.
Bubaris is due in court Oct. 22.
