Powerful storms rolled through the area Wednesday, causing damage and leaving some seniors without electricity.
The electricity went out early in the morning at a Jackson Avenue complex in Eastchester. Hundreds of seniors were also left without air conditioning there, and many were trapped because they were unable to climb down the stairs.
Down the street, lightning shattered windows at Optimo Cigars at around 7 a.m. with the owner and a customer inside. Large pieces of glass were strewn across the sidewalk, but no one was hurt. A worker says the impact of the lightning sounded like a manhole cover blowing or two cars crashing into each other.
A tree also fell onto wires at Marbledale Road and Main Street just over the Tuckahoe border.
Con Edison crews were at affected scenes trying to restore power. At the height of the storm, more than 2,000 customers were without power.
