Stalled plans for a pool at a popular YMCA in Orange County could soon leave thousands of members looking for a new place to exercise.
The Monroe YMCA wants to build an indoor pool, but before that can happen, code requires a second access road.
Newly elected village Mayor Neil Dwyer says putting what would be a high-traffic road across a heritage trail could cause major safety issues. He also has problems with where the road would let out on Route 17M.
"In that 1,000 feet, we have nine driveways, 15 businesses with ingressing and egressing in that area," says Dwyer.
A YMCA representative says the previous administration was on board with the expansion, so they made financial arrangements that require following through on building the pool. While the village says the YMCA has threatened to leave if they cannot build, YMCA officials stopped short of saying that. They do say, however, that they only have four to six months before making decisions on what to do next.
Dwyer says they want to keep the YMCA and are committed to coming up with a solution.
