A minority-owned business in Mount Vernon is getting special recognition from the New York City's mayor's office and the FDNY.
Ivy Torres showed officials from the New York City Mayor's Office of Minority and Women-Owned Businesses her 5,000-square-foot production factory in Mount Vernon.
Torres started Atlantic Rolling Steel Door nearly 30 years ago. It's one of the largest manufacturers of rolling steel doors in the New York metro area, with clients such as the FDNY.
She says it hasn't been easy, but Torres has thrived in a male-dominated industry.
Officials point to Torres' success as an example of what can happen when more resources are available to minority-owned businesses.
Atlantic Rolling Steel Door currently has a five-year, $3.4 million contract with the FDNY to service its rolling doors.
Torres' advice for minority women business owners is to keep going and never give up.
Atlantic Rolling Steel Door is certified by New York City's Mayor's Office of Minority and Women-Owned Businesses. It currently has the 15 full-time employees.
