Construction crews reached another milestone in the construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

Crews completed installing the last of the 96 stay cables on the westbound span of the new bridge. The long metal strands are used to hold up the road deck over the middle part of the structure.

Now that the cables are in place, crews can install the final section on the main span. Once that section is complete, the westbound bridge will officially connect Westchester and Rockland counties.

Crews will still have more to do to get the westbound span ready for traffic, such as installing guardrails, traffic lights and more.

Workers will also continue installing the rest of the stay cable system on the eastbound span of the new bridge, as well as huge girders, using the giant super crane.

Once the westbound span is ready to open, traffic will be moved over from the old bridge, and crews will start tearing it down. There is no specific date on when the westbound span will open this year, but the entire bridge is scheduled to be completed by sometime in 2018.
