Milestone reached at new Tappan Zee Bridge
Another milestone has been reached in building the new Tappan Zee Bridge.
Crews have just completed installing the last of the 96 stay cables on the westbound span of the new bridge. Stay cables are supports coming off the main towers that hold the road deck in position.
Now that the cables are in place, crews can install the final section on the main span. Once that section is complete, the westbound bridge will officially connect Westchester and Rockland counties.
Crews will still have more to do to get the westbound span ready for traffic, such as installing guardrails, traffic lights and more.
Workers will also continue installing the rest of the stay cable system on the eastbound span of the new bridge as well as huge girders using the giant super crane.
Once the westbound span is ready to open, traffic will be moved over from the old bridge, and crews will start tearing it down. There is no exact date yet when the span is expected to be completed.
