MetroCards were introduced Sunday for Bee-Line bus passengers, updating the payment system.

Under the new system, riders are able to pay for their bus rides with MetroCards or coins. Dollar bills are no longer accepted. The MetroCards can be purchased at various Westchester convenience stores, or at Metro-North train stations.

The Bee-Line buses are equipped with new payment boxes to accommodate the change. Riders can purchase cards for unlimited rides, at the cost of $24 for 7 days, or pay per ride. Reduced fares are available for senior citizens and the disabled.

County Executive Andy Spano and Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis kicked off the first MetroCard commuter day Monday, with a news conference at Petrillo Plaza in Mount Vernon. Officials say the new system is less expensive and easier to use. Spano says the new system will take some time for customers to get used to.
