Merger to close several Bronx churches
Six churches in the Bronx are shutting down as part of a major citywide merger.
The Archdiocese of New York announced the merging of more than 100 churches, including 20 in the Bronx. Six of those will no longer hold Mass and sacraments after the mergers, which are expected in Aug. 2015.
The affected churches include Saint John, which will be the designated parish for Visitation, Saint Ann will join Saint Brendan and Saint Roch will be merging with Saint Anselm.
Meanwhile, Saint Margaret of Cortona will be the designated parish for Saint Gabriel, while Saint Jerome will host Saint Luke. Holy Family will host Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Assumption will join Saint Mary Star of the Sea.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan says the closures are due to there being too many churches, but not enough money or people to staff them.
