One year after the murder of a 17-year-old North Salem girl, her family honored her memory with a quiet memorial. On Sunday morning, Butler family members held a memorial for their daughter, Elizabeth, who was murdered on June 5, 2005. Her parents and younger sister found her body in the back of their SUV parked at the Croton Falls train station. Butler had been stabbed, strangled and raped. Last Tuesday, Butler?s former boyfriend, 28-year-old Ariel Menendez was found guilty of raping and murdering her. He now faces the maximum sentence of life in prison without parole when he is sentenced next month. Butler?s family members say they are choosing to focus on the positive memories of Elizabeth, not the brutal way she died. They say the community has given them much love and support this past year and they are grateful for all the help. Butler?s mother says her daughter gives her strength.
