A memorial service was held Friday for a deputy U.S. marshal from Rockland who lost his life from a Sept. 11-related illness.
The U.S. Marshal's Service says Marshal Zacarias Toro, of Nanuet, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.
It was determined his cancer was caused by his work at Ground Zero and exposure to toxins at the site.
Toro was promoted to deputy marshal in 2000 and was stationed in lower Manhattan when the first plane hit on Sept. 11.
The 50-year-old is survived by his wife, four children and his mother.
His service was held at the Redeeming Love Christian Center in Nanuet.
