Concerned residents learned more Monday night about a plan to replace an aging bridge in Mamaroneck.
"The Hillside Avenue Bridge is certainly one of the concerns that all residents have in this village," says village mayoral candidate George Mgrditchian.
The bridge, which runs over the Mamaroneck River, is not only structurally deficient -- residents say it's a safety risk.
"It's clear the Hillside Avenue Bridge needs to be repaired or replaced," says Nora Lucas.
The bridge was built in 1936 and has been steadily decaying for years. In 2010, both pedestrian walkways on it collapsed and fell into the river.
In January, the village and town of Mamaroneck -- along with the town of Rye -- received a nearly $3 million grant from the state Department of Transportation. The funding is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Bridge New York, a $200 million initiative to repair decaying bridges across the state.
The project would also incorporate the Army Corps flood mitigation plan to widen the river below and prevent future flooding.
The project is currently in the design stage and expected to get underway in 2019.
