For years, John Jay High School in the Katonah-Lewisboro School District has used the Indian as its official mascot, but now the school board is moving in another direction – and the decision is dividing the school and the community.

The Katonah-Lewisboro school board has decided to retire the school's name and mascot, the Indian, because they find it insulting to the Native American community.

This is not the first school district to change its mascot. In fact, over the years many school districts in the Hudson Valley have weighed in on this controversial issue.

In 2014, Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, now named the Early College High School, changed its mascot from the Indians to the Sharks. In 2013, Ossining High School, once the Ossining Indians became the Ossining Pride and in 2005 the Rhinebeck Indians became the Rhinebeck Hawks.

As the school district turns the page on this part of its history, there is no word yet on what the next mascot will be.
