Maritime College welcomes new president
State University of New York Maritime College celebrated its 140th anniversary and the introduction of a new president on Friday.
Michael Alfultis was sworn in at a ceremony with a full procession of cadets on the Throggs Neck campus.
Students and faculty celebrated that the college, which once suffered from low enrollment, currently produces 30 percent of graduates with engineering bachelor's degrees in the SUNY system.
With the expansion of its academic program, the college hopes to expand physically from its current 55-acre location.
The SUNY school is the oldest maritime college in the country.
