The March for Justice made a pit stop in Peekskill Thursday on its journey to Albany.
The march began on Aug. 26, and Thursday’s rally was held at the Peekskill Presbyterian Church.
Members from the Alliance for Families for Justice and the NAACP gathered at the rally in the hope of changing conditions at prisons.
They say that although criminals are serving time, their treatment could be considered inhumane. They refer back to a 2015 incident involving Samuel Harrell, who died at the Fishkill Correctional Facility.
At the time, the Orange County Medical Examiner did an autopsy and ruled it a homicide, but the district attorney failed to file any charges, saying there was never enough evidence to show that there were civil rights violations.
The March for Justice’s next stop is Cold Spring.
Marchers hope to arrive in Albany on Sept. 13, the 45th anniversary of the Attica uprising.
