NY affordable housing goes smoke-free
Affordable housing became officially smoke-free in New York and nationwide Monday.
The changes come via the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The measure prohibits public housing residents from using tobacco products indoors and within 25 feet of buildings.
However, the Municipal Housing Authority in Yonkers already passed its own smoke-free rule in 2015. It was met with mixed reactions from residents.
Some complain that the rule forces smokers to walk outdoors in dangerous or inclement conditions in order to smoke.
The American Lung Association says affordable housing residents have to think of non-smokers who are at risk from secondhand smoke.
They say lung cancer, respiratory infections and heart attacks are some of the negative affects those subject to secondhand smoke can suffer from.
