Officials managing a Yonkers apartment complex that was devastated in a fire last month responded to complaints from residents that were brought to light by News 12.
News 12 reported that tenants were furious about a proposal from the building's management that would give them just 10 minutes to guide a contractor strapped with a camera through their unit to collect their personal belongings.
Management came up with the plan when they found asbestos in the building after the March 8 four-alarm fire, preventing residents from going back inside.
A lawyer for 671 Bronx River Road Owners Incorporated said that she recognizes the "terrible tragedy,” but management is restricted on who can enter the building by state and city law because of the contaminants inside.
The attorney said allowing residents to retrieve their personal belongings is not covered by insurance, and while it "feels unfair," it's the "best possible solution to an impossible situation."
Attorneys and the co-op board are expected to meet with tenants tonight.
