Authorities say a knife-wielding man was shot by Mount Vernon police inside his home Friday.
Police were called to a house on 158 Stevens Ave. near North 10th Avenue at around 10 a.m. They say they found a 32-year-old man with a knife acting irrationally in the front yard.
Investigators say the man saw police and ran into the house. Upon entering his room, officers were lunged at by the man with a knife and a pair of scissors in his hands.
Initially, police say they unsuccessfully tried using Tasers and pepper spray to subdue the man. Officers then fired about nine shots at him.
He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center. Police say the man is alive, but his condition is unknown at this time. They confirm that he has a history of mental illness.
News 12 has learned that the two Mount Vernon police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
