Man killed in police-involved shooting in Shirley
Authorities say a knife-wielding man was killed in a police-involved shooting in Shirley Saturday afternoon.
It happened on Rockledge Drive around 12:30 p.m. Detectives say the man, who hasn't been identified, was threatening himself and others.
They say a confrontation ensued, and an officer fired a shot that struck the man.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Neighbors tell News 12 the man suffered from mental issues.
They say they are tired of the violence in the neighborhood.
"I'm ready to leave this area," said one woman who didn't want to appear on camera. "I'm done, I'm moving."
The street was still closed to traffic hours after the shooting.
News 12 is told that Suffolk County police are continuing to investigate.
