A reputed gang member was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for the October 2006 killing a teenager in Yonkers.
Edwin Montalvo, 23, was charged with second-degree murder for killing 15-year-old Anthony Charles Taylor outside a KFC restaurant. Investigators believe Montalvo mistook Taylor for a rival gang member. Montalvo pleaded guilty, but later tried to rescind the plea.
Authorities say Montalvo, a reputed member of the Bloods, thought Taylor was a member of the Crips gang because he was wearing that gang?s color, blue. Police say Montalvo confronted Taylor and his girlfriend on the street outside the KFC and shot him in the chest.
Taylor?s family says the victim was going to trade school to become an artist and was not a gang member. They say he was always in school and stayed out of trouble.
?When you took my boy, you destroyed my life. You are a loser and coward," Taylor?s mother, Wanda, told Montalvo in court.
If Montalvo serves the full sentence, he will be 38 years old when he is released from prison. Montalvo?s attorney says his client is not an animal and hopes he can turn his life around once he is released.
