A Bronx man rescued his fishing buddy from the Hudson River only to lose his own life trying to get back to shore Thursday.

Police say three Bronx residents, 40-year-old Wenceslao Guzman, his 10-year-old son and 61-year-old Domingo Agosto were fishing along the river in Tarrytown at approximately 10 a.m. According to police, Guzman went into the water to free his tangled fishing line. However, Guzman couldn't swim and soon found himself in deep water.

Police say Agosto jumped in to save his friend and struggled to get him to safety. Once Guzman caught his breath, police say he turned around and saw Agosto lying face down in the water. His son called 911, prompting a Sleepy Hollow rescue boat to respond minutes later. The Sleepy Hollow fire chief rescued Agosto from the water and administered CPR. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The exact cause of his death is under investigation. The men were fishing on MTA property and Guzman was ticketed for trespassing.
